Naftogaz Ukrainy says holds back $9 mln Gazprom’s overpayment

KIEV, Oct 10 (PRIME) -- Ukrainian energy holding Naftogaz Ukrainy has held back U.S. $9 million from the sum overpaid by Russia’s Gazprom for gas transit as a penalty under a court case, the company said in a statement on Wednesday.

“Today Naftogaz Ukrainy has notified Gazprom about crediting gas transit overpayments to repay a fine that accrues on the debt of the Russian monopolist in accordance with arbitration rulings dated 28 February, 2018 on the transit contract,” the company said.

It added that the overpayment occurred due to tariff recalculation by the Stockholm arbitration court on December 22, 2017.

The Stockholm arbitration court ruled earlier in 2018 that Gazprom must pay Naftogaz U.S. $2.56 billion for non-shipment of gas, but the ruling was later suspended by the court of appeals of Sweden. In September, the court cancelled its previous decision.
